Race Report September 22nd 2009
Hey everyone! I guess you could say it has been a little while since my last Race Report. Lots of stuff has been moving and shaking in my life and my racing since my last update. I have competed in quite a few races, and the most exciting thing in my life is that I recently got engaged! I am super stoked on getting married!

After the CCS VIR round there was a little slow point in my schedule. I raced at Road Atlanta, and then had two weekends off, then was the AMA Pro race at Mid - Ohio. I raced at Mid-Ohio with Four Feathers Racing for Scotty VanHawk. Scotty has been a friend of mine for quite a while now and he needed someone to ride his bikes during the Pro weekend. I took advantage of the opportunity and drove up to check out how the NEW AMA runs their weekends.

All in all it was an alright weekend. I rode hard and finished alright on the equipment. The team had a few problems with the bikes. In Daytona Sportbike Race One the bike had some transmission problems, and in American Superbike, the clutch fried in Race One as well. So the two DNFs on Saturday were chalked up as a bad day. In Sunday’s races I finished 11th in American Superbike and 17th in Daytona Sportbike.

After the Mid-Ohio weekend I had another two weekends off. Some of the tracks that WERA and CCS were going to, I don’t think are safe enough to race at so I decided to do other stuff. The most important of which was propose to Teri. July 24th was her birthday weekend so I had a pretty awesome weekend planned. We drove up to the Cherohala Skyway in the morning and rode our bicycles up about 12.5 miles and 3000 feet of elevation. I had it planned out to ask her to marry me on one of the look outs that over looked the valley down below. It was an awesome weekend; we stayed up in Tellico Plains Tennessee. We basically spent the weekend riding our bicycles and having a good time.

The next race weekend was the WERA Cycle Jam at VIR. I planned to hang out the week after and compete in the AMA Pro weekend that was following the WERA event. During the Cycle Jam I must have had my head screwed on too tight. I made some bonehead mistakes on Saturday and crashed out of both my races. On Sunday I calmed down and managed a 4th after rebuilding a bike. That was the first time this season that I just felt like I made stupid rookie mistakes.

I raced the AMA weekend on my own Kawasaki ZX6R, Teri and I assembled a team for the weekend. Rick Matheny came up and was my Crew Chief, Teri was the head mechanic, and Toland Shipp helped out where ever we needed it. I ended up finishing 12th and 13th during the weekend, I found out some problems that I had with my bike when I switched over to the spec Dunlop’s. Daytona Sportbike certainly is a competitive class. It was a fun weekend racing and I had a great time with my friends. I really feel like I belong in the AMA Pro Paddock, I miss it!
After the AMA weekend at VIR I had another two weekends off then two weekends in a row racing. One was at Jennings GP and another was at Barber Motorsports Park. Both weekends went good. I will post up all the results as the bottom of the page.

The two BIG races I am getting ready for are the Michelin Nationals at Barber Motorsports Park and The Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta. I am really excited to go race! I will be sure to update you guys ASAP!

Race Report June 23rd 2009

I just got done racing at VIR this past weekend and I do have to say the southern heat was turned up to high! Teri, Lola (our dog) and I headed out on Thursday night and in typical fashion got a late start so we ended up not getting to the track until 1:30 am. We paid at the gate and got a good spot to park. I guess people really didn’t start rolling in until Friday night.

I only signed up for the Kawasaki 600 money races which included Middle Weight Super Sport and Middle Weight Superbike. The ZX10 has just pretty much been parked for now. I am just having so much fun riding the 600s that I don’t really want to waste my time on the big bike. This was the first time that I have ridden a 600 around VIR since 2004, so needless to say I needed to get the bike dialed in.

On Friday, the practice day, I just spent time on getting the gearing straight and the basic setup dialed in. It didn’t take too long just had to make a few different rear and front sprocket swaps and finally got it right. The day went well and I got done what I was set out to achieve, gearing, tires, and general set up.

On Saturday I decided to race the GTU which is CCS’s extended race, it’s like 16 laps or something. I figured that it would give me some good information going into Sunday. I was going to start on row 5, which wasn’t too far back. I worked my way into the lead by lap three and didn’t look back. It was a good race for me I won with a sizeable lead and got ready for Sunday.
Sunday rolled around and my Middle Weight Supersport race was first, I was going to be starting on the 7th row and there were two row breaks in front of me so it was more like staring on row 9! I was certainly going to have my work cut out for me. Brain Stokes was starting on the front row and was the only other guy that was posting some fast times in the 600 class. When the green flag dropped I got an excellent launch, which was messed up by an equally excellent poor line choice, I got cut off hard by a guy on an R6 and had to lift the throttle early going into turn one. By lap two I had worked up to fourth then the red flag came out. We were sent to wait on the hot pit then the decision came to send up back to our pit. Since the Team Challenge was the same day the schedule was shuffled and we were set to race after 2 pm, it was 10am when this plan was decided.

After waiting half the day we finally got Middle Weight Supersport started. This time the start was much better and I was in second by the end of the first lap and in first shortly after. I started to open up a gap and kept my head down the whole race. I won with a pretty good lead, the bike was working great and I was ready for the second race of the day.

In Middle Weight Superbike I was starting on row 5, so not as much work cut out for me but it was still not the front row! I got a great start and the race was on. By the end of lap one was in the lead and Stokes was close behind. I had to work a little harder to win but I did.
All in all the weekend was great for me. I accomplished all of the goals that I set for myself, won some races, and had a lot of fun! Stay tuned for my next up date, the next race is WERA at Road Atlanta. It’s my home track and I can’t wait to have some fun!

Race Report May 27th 2009
Some people think that going around chasing money has got to be easy. I think that probably three years ago it might have been easier than it is now in 2009, as long as you were able to stand being on the road for weeks at a time. Now, there is certainly more competition at these races. Some weekends you show up and there are 4 or 5 guys racing for money.

I just finished a five week plus road trip that had me racing every weekend. It had its ups and downs, I won some I lost some, and I drove some straight to the ground. I made mistakes and had triumphant passes that shot me into the lead at the right time. All in all I had fun and learned some things on the way. Yes, that is right I still learn things about my riding.

I showed up at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit on Thursday May 15th to compete in my first CMRA race this season. I haven’t been to Hallett since 2003 when I was novice racing in the WERA National Series. CMRA was running the track backwards than the track that I had ridden on 6 years ago. So, I figured that I needed to get a little bit of seat time. The weather was going to be a little dicey and thunderstorms were predicted for the whole weekend.
I got through Friday and got kind of a basic set up for my races on Sunday; so my mechanic for the weekend Brian Stricker and I decided to go watch a movie to kill some time.

Now, I thought that Hallett was going to be kind of an easy weekend. I didn’t think that that many people would show up, I was way out in left field with that thought. Quite a few of the local CMRA hot shoes showed up. I of course did not have any points so would be staring in the very back of all my races. This made for a challenging race weekend and I ended up with only two 4ths, one 1st and a DNF. In my last race I was getting a little impatient with a rider that was parking it in the corners; I tried to make and aggressive pass on him going into the “bus stop” and ended up getting the raw deal out of my attempt. My front wheel contacted his back and well I ended up hitting the deck. It just wasn’t such a great weekend for me, but I guess you are going to have those every once and a while.

My next race weekend was at Barber Motorsports Park, with the WERA Southeast region. I was excited to get on the road and head back to the southeast. I knew that I was going to have at least a few nights in my own bed and a few days to get the ZX6R back together for the race weekend. I showed up on Saturday the 23rd and decided that I would enter the Solo 20 for some seat time; I wanted to get a basic set up for Sunday’s races. The weather was pretty much going to be crap for the weekend with rain expected every day. I got through Saturday without getting wet and won my Solo race, also got my basic set up for Sunday.

When I woke up Sunday morning I knew it was going to be wet by the sound of the rain on the trailer roof. I decided not to go out in the first practice but go out in the second one instead, what a bad idea. The track just couldn’t handle all the water that was coming down and there were little rivers running across the race line everywhere not only that, but there was standing water too! When you hit a puddle straight up and down and your handle bars go full lock, it is certainly eye opening!

The track dried up a little for the first race, it was almost to dry for rains in some areas but to wet for DOTs in some areas. I lead the A Superstock race for almost the whole race, then Lee Acree got by me going into turn 5 on his GSXR 750. Lee was riding really well and I just couldn’t get back up to him before the checkered flag. In the C Superstock race I went back out on the rain tires I had raced on earlier. It looked like a storm was going to come; light rain fell for a second or two. Then as we lined up the sun came out. I knew I had made a bad decision to race on rains with a drying track. I battled for the lead with Stokes and even lead a lap or two. I burned the rain tires up by lap 4 and just held on to finish third.

C Superbike was the next race. I put on Michelin DOTs for that race and was ready for some action. I grabbed the lead by the end of lap one and put my head down. Daniel Parkerson passed me on lap 4 going into turn 5. I was right on his rear wheel coming out of the back chicane, my front brake lever hit his leg at one point and locked my front wheel up. SCARY! I passed Daniel going into turn 1 when he made the wrong choice trying to get by some lappers. On the last lap he stuffed me pretty big going into 14A, it kind of set me off in my helmet. Turn about is fair play, I rammed it up underneath him going into the last turn. I don’t think he was expecting a last ditch effort by me, I had the advantage going down the front straight and won a very close race.

750 Superbike was the last race of the day for me and well was way less exciting than the C Superbike race. I just rode smooth and took the win.
All in all, I know that doing this is pretty tough. I have ridden every weekend for like the last 6 weekends or something like that. I have had a lot of fun but am looking forward to a much needed weekend off. I have to get some maintenance done on the bikes! I am at home now which is nice, and am heading down to Jennings GP to do a Florida regional race with WERA this coming up Sunday. I will let you guys know how that one turns out!

Race Report 5-7-2009

I figured that I would write this report a little differently. The last few were more press release style; this one is going to be more of a blog type report from what has been going on for the past few weeks. I know that you guys have probably been wondering what has been going on. Here is the answer.

So I have been on the road for 3 weeks now and what will be 4 race weekends in a row including this up coming weekend. Life on the road has been fun and has paid off, with lots of fun and racing action. Also, it has been tough work and a lot of hours driving, working on bikes and days away home.

Week one started off down at Jennings GP this time with WERA during their Sprint and National combined weekend. WERA always offers great racing and some tough competition. I raced in 5 different classes during the weekend. Robert Jensen, Cory West, and Taylor Knapp were all on hand which made for some great racing.

In the 600 Superstock race, there was a four way battle for the number one spot for most of the race. I was shuffled back to fourth until about half way, I managed to work my way up to second but by that time Jensen had a good lead that I could not close up on. In the 1000 Superstock I took third place in spite starting 7th on the gird and getting a horrible start that put me back to 9th. I rode a pretty smooth race and worked my way up to the last podium spot. Those were the highlights of that weekend. I will put all the results at the bottom of the page for you guys.

I drove cross country the next week to Colorado to race with the MRA at Pueblo Motorsports Park. Located just south of Denver, Pueblo is part of a motorsports “complex”. The road course is part of a drag strip and is in the middle of their Off Road Riding area. This was the first time that I have ever raced with MRA; I have to say it was a great experience. I was set to race 7 classes over the weekend. The 1000 Superstock race was a good way to start the weekend. I came from the last row on the grid to take the win. It kind of lifted a weight off my shoulders for the weekend. Plus to win on the ZX10 was good, that bike is really picky on set ups. The next race was the 600 SuperStock race; I came from the last row and stalked the leader. I passed him around half-way and continued to lead until the last lap when I ran off the track in the turns 6A and 6B area. I did not have enough of a lead to get back on the track and try to regain the time I had lost and ended up taking second. I was pretty mad at myself for making a amateur mistake. I learned a lesson and ended up finishing the weekend with 4 wins, one second and two fourths.

After the MRA weekend it was back to the East Coast for the WERA Sprint weekend in Ohio at Nelson Ledges Road Course. I had heard some bad things about this track like the condition of the racing surface wasn’t so great and that the run off areas were pretty small. When I pulled up on Thursday evening and drove across the race surface (through a big mud puddle and then over). I thought to myself “just get in and get out in one piece”. I signed up on Friday for the open practice, and my second session out I made a deal with myself to never come back to Nelson and race. The track was really bumpy and the surface was deteriorated to something that reminded of a bombed out World War 2 air runway in some country that I have never been too. The stuff you read books about and look at old black and white photos of. I managed to get some set up notes and get ready for the races on Sunday. Saturday I worked on the bikes all day and just did some little stuff that I needed to get done. Sunday rolled around and I was signed up for 7 classes to compete in. I ended up only racing five but I will get to that later.

Race one was the 1000 Superstock race, I was starting in the back of all 7 of the races this weekend. Like usual on the ZX10 was a bad start, I worked my way up to second by lap three and was shadowing the fast local Sam Gauge. By the end of lap three we ran into a few lappers and I was able to get around them cleaner than Sam and held on to first by the time the checkered flag came out. In the 600 Superstock race I made a few bad choices. I didn’t have the right gearing and didn’t run race fuel. I stayed with Gauge the whole race and was planning a last lap pass on the fast back straight. As soon as I pulled out of the draft to make the pass I hit the rev limiter. My chance to win went down the drain and I ended up with a second. For the 600 Superbike race I came loaded for bear, race fuel and a gearing change worked out to my advantage and I took first place. Like I said before I ended up only racing 5 classes, I had one race back to back and skipped the less important one to get ready for the 600 Superbike race, and I just did not race the last race of the day because I did not want to push my luck at a track that I wasn’t too hyped about racing at.

All of this leads me to where I am now, hanging out in Denver Colorado. I just finished my second MRA Race weekend at the newly built High Plains Raceway. This was the first race weekend that the MRA was racing at the new facility. At Pueblo almost everyone I talked to asked if I was going to make it back out to Colorado to race at HPR. The track itself is awesome, the facility is so new that no structures are built yet; just mobile offices live in the places of future buildings. The surface is pool table smooth and the layout is very challenging and fun, top notch track for sure. I was slated to race 8 different classes; with the way things went however I only raced 4.

On Saturday I raced in three different classes, Middleweight, Heavyweight, and Open Supersport. I was starting on the front row in all three of my races; this made it a little easier getting into turn 1. I pulled the hole shot in the Middleweight Supersport and didn’t look back; I won with a 14 second lead. The Heavyweight Supersport race was similar to the race before. I got the hole shot going into turn 1 and didn’t look back, I won with and 11 second led.

The Open Supersport race is when things kind of started going awry. I basically tried to act like a stunter off the line and wheelied the ZX10 twice. I hate starting that bike, it seems like I never get a decent start on it. So basically my first row start was down the drain. Jason Disalvo was racing as well this past weekend and ended up getting a great start and took over the lead by turn 3. So my work was cut out for me, I chased Disalvo for the whole race and ended up setting the track record in the process. On the white flag lap I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to catch him so I back my pace down quite a bit. I went around turns 4, 5 and 6 pretty calmly, when I got to turn 11 I thought I was going pretty slow, but I tucked the front anyways. Now this is after the fact that I was pushing the front and sliding the rear the whole race. So I am still in awe as to why I lost the front when I was close to 1.5 seconds slower on my second to last lap.
This leads me into Sunday, when I woke up it was wet, cold and rainy out. I pretty much decided that I was only going to race the Middleweight Superbike race in which Kawasaki pays, all the other races I wasn’t going to race in. I didn’t have any rain front tires, so I decided to groove a DOT front and race on it. I went out for 10 minutes of practice and got the bike dialed in. I figured that I was set to go for the race. I got the hole shot and for the first half of the lap I felt pretty good. Then I came to turn 11, yeah the same turn that took the ZX10 out, I pointed the bike up the hill and stated to get on the gas. Then boom, I lost the front. It was a really slow low side and it didn’t hurt anything on the bike. I gave it a once over and headed towards the pits to get a re-tech and get back out. I guess in the MRA if you fall your race is over. I couldn’t get a re-tech and head back out, so my weekend was over.

Looking back on the weekend it was certianly an up and down race weekend. I set a track record, won a few races, crashed and burned but all in all I had a good time.

Thanks for all the help this year!

Talladega Grand Prix, March 29th WERA/Michelin National

The second race on Matt Lynn’s schedule was round 2 of the WERA National Challenge Series held at Talladega Gran Prix, located in Munford Alabama. The Weather for the weekend was forecasted to be pretty bad for Friday and Saturday with a lot of rain and thunderstorms, but clearing out on Sunday. Friday morning rain has set in and covered the track with puddles, however the rain had stopped by 10 o’clock and the track was starting to dry out around noon. Matt spent the morning prepping the ZX10R to ride the half day of practice, “I pretty much just used today to work on the ZX10. I know that I still have some work to do on the bike. It’s getting better; I am just trying to figure out how to get it to do what I want.”
Sunday morning, race day, was overcast, cold, and windy, practice started at 8:30am and track did not have any heat in it. “I used this morning to try some settings that I wanted to and I think that I have the 600 dialed in for the two races today, the 1000 is working pretty well too.” Matt said.
Race 1 was the Open Superstock race on the big ZX10. Matt wheelies off the start which cost him 3 positions; but he put his head down and made up the positions and worked his way into 6th. “My start was horrible; I think I lifted the front wheel twice, I need to work on it. As for the bike, it was working alright, I know that I can do better I just need to get this thing figured out.”
Race 2 was the 600 Superstock race; Matt was looking forward to this race and was excited to race the zx6. He was gridded on the second row which gave him a clear view to the first turn. Matt was fourth going into turn one, a little bobble by Taylor Knapp pushed Matt wide which let 2 riders get under him. Going into turn two Matt passed one rider. Brian Stokes was in front of Matt and by turn four Matt had put a pass on him and worked his way into fourth place. Matt had a clear view of the trio of Corey West, Taylor Knapp and Robert Jensen; he was just out of touch of three in front on him. “Those guys were just running a faster pace than I could. They were just going at it up there, and once they gapped me I just couldn’t push to catch them” said Matt.
Race 3 was the 600 Superbike race, Matt had a front row start for this race. Jensen grabbed the lead off the start; Matt was chasing him down for the first half of the race. A bobble over in the turn 5 area cost Matt and Robert was able to gap him just a little. Matt crossed the line second after the 12 lap race. “I knew going into this race that Robert was going to be tough. I went close to half a second faster in this race. I feel that I am making progress on getting the bike dialed in for me.”
Race 4 for Matt was the last race of the day, Formula 1. Matt was starting from the 5th row and knew he was going to have some work to do. “I have been using the Formula 1 race as kind of a set up race for me to try new settings or tires on the ZX10. I have been working hard on this bike. I started on the fifth row and had a lot of positions to make up. The bike wasn’t handling that well on the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd lap. It seemed to start coming around after half way. Unfortunately I broke my shift rod and couldn’t finish the race.” Matt was gaining on the 3 guys in front of him Jacobi, Hunt and Acree when he pulled out.

Roebling Road Raceway, March 15th WERA/Michelin National

Round one of the WERA National Challenge Series started off in southwest Georgia at Roebling Road Raceway. The forecast for the three day event was ominous with thunderstorms predicted for the majority of the weekend.Friday started off with early morning fog and the skies looking very grey. Matt Lynn picked up his bikes from RM Racing the night before at 10pm. Rick Matheny had built the engines a few weeks prior, so it was time to dyno tune them after Matt had finished race prepping the newly built 2009 Kawasaki ZX10 and ZX6. Friday was the WERA practice day and qualifying for the 600 SuperStock and Open Superstock classes. Matt’s goals for the day were just to get a good starting point for both of the bikes. This would be the first time that he had thrown a leg over a race bike in 6 months. Friday ended well on the 600 with Matt qualifying in the sixth starting position; however on the ZX10 he had not done as well and was starting 12th. “The ZX10 defiantly needs some work, I have tried a few different set-ups but really haven’t come up with anything” Lynn states, “This track is a fast and flowing with not very much hard braking, right now I am having some chatter issues.”Saturday started off much like Friday but only gave Matt one practice session on each bike. “Mike Fitzgerald from Ohlin’s helped me out last night with some different suggestions to try” Says Lynn. By the end of practice on Saturday Matt was making progress with the ZX6 but struggling with the ZX10 and was working hard to improve on his qualifying time from Friday.Sunday morning fog pushed practice back by an hour, but WERA shuffled the morning schedule around and all of the racers got two rounds of practice. “This morning practice went well, it was a little foggy for the first round, but I could see the track well. I am looking forward to getting gridded up and racing!” said Matt. “I entered two more races this morning just so I could try to get these bikes more sorted out before the WERA National at Talladega in just a few weeks”.Race 1 was the Open Superstock race, Matt was starting from the 12th position. Lynn got a good start and worked his way up into ninth by turn 3. On lap five Mark Junge got a better drive coming onto the front straight and passed Lynn going into turn one, Lynn tried to charge but the bike seemed not to be cooperating with his plans. With two laps to go Brian Bemister got by Matt on the front straight as well. “ I just couldn’t get the drive off of the last corner, it’s a fast right hander leading up to the long front straight, I tried another set up from Saturday, I just couldn’t put as much pressure on the front tire as I wanted to.” Lynn ended the race in 11th position.Race 2 saw Matt grid up for the 600 Superstock class, he was looking forward to this because they had been making progress with the ZX6. Starting in sixth position Lynn knew that he could work his way up to the front. When the green flag dropped Lynn Nailed the start and worked his way into fourth place by turn one. He was in touch with the lead group of Knapp, West and Jensen; as the half way flag was shown the group had gapped him just enough for Matt not to be in the draft down the long front straight. With one lap remaining Lynn held a solid fourth place finish. “I knew once those guys got out I was going to lose touch with them, they were running a really fast pace. This is the fastest I have been on the ZX6 yet, a few problems showed up so I think we will use the 600 Superbike race to try some new things. “Race 3 was the 600 superbike class, Matt was starting from the very last position since he had decided to enter at the last minute, and a stellar start saw Matt take the lead by the first turn. By lap two Lynn had gapped the field, and would take the win. “We made a few little changes nothing big, and the bike seemed to work really well, I think that we have a good starting place for Talladega.”Race 4 the final race of the day was Formula One, once again Lynn would start from the back. The green dropped and Matt got a good start, as he went into turn one he knew right away the changes they made from the first race where not going to work. On lap two he pulled in and tweaked the suspension some. “I knew this race was just to try some set up stuff, I want to get this ZX10 working. We tried some big changes and they didn’t work. I know which direction I want to go now for sure. When I went back out after I came in I lost the front in turn four, I have been fighting chatter all weekend with this thing. The bike isn’t beat up bad and I am still in once piece so everything is good.” Lynn said with a smile. The next event for Matt Lynn is the WERA National at Talladega Gran Prix on March 27 – 29thMatt Lynn Racing would like to thank all of our sponsors:
